Whale watching in Hilo, Hawaii

Come catch a glimpse of Hawai‘i’s gentle giants and winter visitors, the humpback whale! After a nonstop six- to eight-week and 6,000-mile migration from Alaska, approximately 12,000 North Pacific humpbacks arrive in the Hawaiian Islands every year around mid-December for a season of mating, birthing, and nurturing their newborn calves.

This annual migration is one of the longest of any mammal and brings magic to the Hawaiian Islands each winter. Venture outside Hilo’s breakwall in search of these majestic creatures for an up-close and personal, once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Reserve your spot on our Hilo whale watching tour today!

This tour has a weight limit of 275 lbs. Those with back problems or weakness should not participate in this tour. Whale migration is seasonal and tours only operate during the winter months. Hilo is exposed to the windward shore. Please be prepared for possible rough seas and rain. Seasickness medication is recommended for those unaccustomed to the open ocean. Children under 5 years are not permitted.

Please check in at Wailoa Boat Harbor 10 minutes before your trip. Detailed directions will be included in your confirmation email.

Whale watching adventure

Captain Kimo runs a tight ship! He’s super knowledgeable and brought water juice and snacks for the trip. We left at 1130 and we started seeing whales literally less than 20 minutes after departing. It was amazing. Followed the whales for 2 hours and seen a full body breach by an adult humpback!! The most exciting thing I’ve ever experienced on this island by far!!! I highly recommend HOA and I can’t wait to go out with them again! 10/10

Whale watching

The captain was very knowledgeable and lead us straight to a pod of whales. We eventually saw two pods of whales, which were very close to our boat. It was a once in a lifetime experience! An absolutely amazing, beautiful experience!
